The football world is in mourning after the shock deaths of Liverpool star Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, on July 3. Their passing came less than two weeks after the striker had celebrated his wedding.
Spanish Civil Guard investigators are currently examining the crash, with evidence strongly suggesting excessive speed was a factor. "All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota," the Civil Guard stated. Earlier reports from the force indicated a possible tire blowout during an overtaking maneuver led to the vehicle crashing and bursting into flames in Zamora province.
Hours before the tragic accident, Jota had shared a video of his June 22 wedding to Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
The deaths have led to a massive outpouring of grief, especially in their native Portugal and at Jota's Premier League club, Liverpool. Family, friends, political leaders, and star players from both Portugal and Liverpool attended the emotional funeral on Saturday in Gondomar, a suburb of Porto.
Jota became a fan favorite at Liverpool after joining the club in 2020, following successful spells at Atletico Madrid, Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He scored 65 goals for the Reds over five seasons, helping them secure the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22 and a record-equaling 20th English league title last season. Jota also earned 49 caps for Portugal, contributing to their UEFA Nations League victory this year. His younger brother, Andre, played in midfield for FC Penfield in Portugal's second division.
