Third-party outage tracker Downdetector reported over 20,000 outages by 2 p.m. PDT, with the most reports coming from Boston, New York City, Tampa, Miami, and Chicago. Verizon stated that its engineers were working "quickly to identify and solve the issue" and began seeing "service restoration in impacted areas" by 6 p.m.
While many customers took to social media to voice frustration over the slow response, service was largely restored in the Bay Area and other major cities by 7:30 p.m. By midnight, only a few hundred customers nationwide were still reporting issues.
