Pentagon to Pull 5,000 Troops from Germany as Trump Threatens Further Cuts

The Pentagon announced on Friday that the United States will withdraw approximately 5,000 military personnel from Germany over the coming year, a move President Donald Trump characterized as merely the initial phase of a larger reduction.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated the decision followed a force posture review and was based on "theater requirements and conditions on the ground," with the process expected to take six to twelve months.

Retaliation for Diplomatic Discord

The decision appears tied to escalating tensions between President Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the ongoing U.S. war with Iran.

  • Chancellor Merz recently accused the U.S. of being "humiliated" by Iran and entering a conflict without a "clear strategy," describing the situation as "ill-considered."
  • In response, President Trump rejected Merz’s remarks and indicated that the United States intended to implement troop reductions significantly deeper than the preliminary cut of 5,000 personnel.
  • The president also targeted Italy and Spain, threatening troop cuts in those nations due to what he perceives as insufficient support in the Iranian conflict.

Bipartisan Concern and Allied Reactions

The move has met resistance from U.S. lawmakers and varying reactions from German leadership.

PartyReaction / Action
U.S. Congressional ChairmenRepublican Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Mike Rogers expressed they are "very concerned" and urged moving troops to Eastern Europe instead to deter conflict.
German Defense MinistryMinister Boris Pistorius called the announcement "foreseeable" and stated it highlights the need for Europe to manage its own security.
German ChancellorDespite his critiques of the war, Merz maintained that his relationship with Trump remains "good."

The Strategic Importance of Germany

Germany has long served as a critical hub for U.S. and NATO operations in Europe.

  • Located in Germany, Ramstein Air Base acts as the central command for U.S. Air Forces in Europe. The installation is responsible for critical operations, including aeromedical evacuations, as well as airlift and airdrop missions.
  • As of December 2025, there were 36,436 active-duty U.S. military personnel permanently stationed in Germany.
  • While Germany allows the use of its air bases for logistics, it has prohibited their use as staging grounds for direct offensive strikes against Iran.

Post-War Pledges

Germany has attempted to satisfy U.S. demands by pledging assistance for a potential "post-war phase." Berlin recently announced the deployment of a naval minesweeper to the Mediterranean to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz once hostilities end, though these gestures have so far failed to placate the Trump administration.
